Powder Blue Tang
Powder Blue Tang
The Powder Blue Tang (Acanthurus leucosternon) is a striking marine fish known for its vibrant coloration and graceful swimming behavior. Here's a general description:
The Powder Blue Tang has a sleek, oval-shaped body with a deeply forked tail fin, typical of the surgeonfish family. It features a bright powder blue coloration across its body, which is offset by a yellow dorsal fin and tail. Juveniles may exhibit a darker blue body color, which lightens as they mature. Their eyes are often surrounded by a yellow ring, adding to their distinctive appearance.
Native to the Indo-Pacific region, Powder Blue Tangs are commonly found in coral-rich areas and rocky reefs with strong currents. They prefer depths ranging from 3 to 25 meters, where they graze on algae and detritus. These fish are known for their active swimming habits and can be solitary or form small groups.
Powder Blue Tangs are herbivores, primarily feeding on algae and other plant material in the wild. In captivity, they require a diet rich in algae and vegetable matter, supplemented with occasional meaty foods like mysis shrimp or spirulina-enriched brine shrimp. They are active grazers and benefit from frequent feedings throughout the day.
Keeping a Powder Blue Tang requires a spacious aquarium with ample swimming room and hiding places. They thrive in environments with strong water movement and stable water parameters. Due to their territorial nature, it's best to introduce them last to a well-established tank to minimize aggression toward other tankmates. Proper tank maintenance, including regular water changes and algae management, is crucial for their health.
Feeding on PE mysis.
